A lifetime of Schiele

Since its foundation on the 100th anniversary of his death in 1990, the Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln's former district prison has been dedicated to the biography and early work of this exceptional artist. To mark the 100th anniversary of his death in 2018, this museum gem was completely redesigned in a unique collaboration between the city of Tulln as the owner of the building and NÖ Museum Betriebs as the operator of the museum. With the new installation, it became wheelchair-accessible except for the studio (2nd floor) and is also equipped with an inviting forecourt and a popular playground. The Egon Schiele Museum is open seasonally from April to October.

Schiele in private

The Egon Schiele Museum welcomes its visitors on the ground floor with a living room atmosphere, as the aim is to get to know Egon Schiele in private. In the so-called "treasure chamber", a former prison cell, around a dozen often little-known early works by Tulln's most famous son are exhibited every year, each highlighting an important theme from his life. Equipped with a handheld device and headphones, visitors can then embark on a journey of discovery. In the stairwell, the most important people in Egon Schiele's life are presented with animated images and audio portraits.

Schiele in Texan

As a young student, Alessandra Comini, now the doyenne of Schiele research, set off from Texas to Austria. In the 1960s, she visited the important Schiele locations of Tulln, Klosterneuburg, Neulengbach, Krems, Vienna and Mühling with her camera. She conducted audio interviews with Egon Schiele's sisters Gerti and Melanie and his sister-in-law Adele Harms. The Egon Schiele Museum is the only museum in Europe to own these original recordings. The original voices of his relatives can be heard in six audiovisual stations.

Exploring Schiele

In addition to the six audiovisual stations, there are two "desks" with numerous in-depth audio and video material as well as a "research street" where scientists explain their approach to Egon Schiele. So if you want to find out more about Egon Schiele the man, the Egon Schiele Museum is the place to be.

Schiele inspires

During opening hours, the Egon Schiele Museum store offers numerous products relating to Egon Schiele as well as the "Atelier2Go". The all-round artistic package to take away is suitable for getting creative at home or in the museum's outdoor area. Of course, creative programs are also offered for all age groups. Every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month there is a guided tour of the museum at 13:00.
