Rainy day" ship
Hundertwasser's heart and soul
It is not only in Egon Schiele's birthplace that you can experience the life of a great artist, but also in the guest harbor, where Friedensreich Hundertwasser's ship Regentag is moored. It gives visitors an authentic impression of the artist's life on his numerous travels. The name Regentag was Hundertwasser's third artist's name - a name he gave to his ship and which the ship gave back to him.
The Regentag stands for a significant period in Hundertwasser's life. He lived and painted on her for ten years; she was his home, his land, his headquarters. He had been preoccupied with ships since his childhood, repeatedly painting them in his works and dreaming himself into their world: "singing steamers", "mouth boats", portholes, steam chimneys - and of course the Regentag itself appeared in his art and finally found expression in the real ship.

A colorful life at sea
In 1968, Friedensreich Hundertwasser acquired the transport ship "San Giuseppe T", built in 1910, in Palermo and sailed it to Venice. Seven years of conversion work transformed it into his artistic vision and formed the painter's first practical architectural apprenticeship.
After sea trials in the Mediterranean, the Regentag proved her seaworthiness in 1975/76 on a voyage to New Zealand under Captain Horst Wächter. Hundertwasser himself was active as captain on Mediterranean and Caribbean voyages as well as on the final leg to Tahiti. In the South Pacific, the Regentag was under the care of Captain Andrew Fagan and Richard Smart. In 2004, the ship was brought to Europe by cargo and moored in Tulln on the occasion of the exhibition "Hundertwasser. Art - Man - Nature" exhibition, with planned integration into the 2008 State Garden Show and the Tulln Water Park on the Danube.

Monument protection and conversions
In 2015, the Regentag was placed under monument protection by the Federal Monuments Office. Between 2018 and 2024, a comprehensive refurbishment was carried out by boat builder Tobias van Kooij on behalf of the Hundertwasser Gemeinnützige Privatstiftung, the owner of the ship.
Hundertwasser lengthened the ship from 12 to over 16 meters, extended the hull, added two masts and redesigned the bow and stern. He designed the superstructure creatively and asymmetrically. Between 1999 and 2000, Hundertwasser had the hull encased in ferro-cement, renewed the wheelhouse and tiled the waterline.
