The Tulln sugar factory
An industrial landmark of Lower Austria
After the Second World War, Tulln developed into the center of the Lower Austrian sugar industry. The AGRANA sugar factory was expanded and still dominates the cityscape today - with its six distinctive silos and the characteristic sweet, malty aroma of beet processing.
The factory grew out of the demand for raw sugar and was expanded into a production facility for consumer sugar from 1948. New buildings, a separate sugar warehouse and workers' apartments were built - and from the 1950s, sugar cubes were also produced.
Since 1987, the name "Wiener Zucker" has stood for the highest quality from Tulln.
Formerly, an inscription at the entrance proudly bore the message:
"This factory is the property of the beet farmers of Lower Austria."
