Gardening tips for the summer

WATER FOR THE PLANTS
Plants have a particularly high water requirement in summer. This can be reduced by planting native shrubs and perennials that are suitable for the location.
"Some native plant species have developed special mechanisms to get through dry periods well. For example, dense, woolly leaves prevent rapid evaporation, such as in the case of mullein or foxglove," say the Tulln city gardeners. A layer of mulch also helps to prevent dehydration.

REMOVE WEEDS
Regular weeding is crucial for your plants to thrive. The easiest way to do this is when the soil is moist and the weeds have not yet flowered - ideally you should pull them out together with the roots. Using the right tools, such as a hoe or pruner, makes the work easier, and regular weeding prevents the weeds from growing back vigorously.

COLD COFFEE MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL
Coffee grounds are an excellent fertilizer, they are rich in phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and minerals and are therefore particularly suitable for plants that require acidic soil.
"Collect the coffee grounds and allow them to dry well in an airy place. You can work them well into the soil by the roots two to four times a year. The remaining coffee grounds can be added to the compost," recommend the Tulln city gardeners.

ECOLOGICAL PLANT PROTECTION
Ecological plant protection focuses on preventative measures. The promotion of healthy, living soil, the selection of suitable native plant species and the right location as well as preventative plant care and the promotion of beneficial insects can often prevent the need for chemical pest control.
